Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc says Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be the Justice and Development Party’s presidential nominee
ANKARA – Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s candidacy for the Turkish presidency will be announced on July 1, as long as he agrees, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Wednesday.
He said: “We all desire it so. All of our friends with whom we spoke and met, every segment… have expressed their views for him to be the candidate for president.”
Only one issue remains, added Arinc: “The appreciation of the prime minister regarding this issue”.
Turkish voters are set to directly elect the president for the first time on August 10. If necessary a second round of voting will be held on August 26.
If Erdogan, prime minister since March 2003, is selected by the ruling Justice and Development Party he will face Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, candidate of two opposition parties, the Republican People’s Party and the Nationalist Movement Party.
