TUNIS – Tunisia's Islamist Ennahda movement has congratulated Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his victory in Sunday's presidential election.

"We congratulate our brother Erdogan on his victory in the Turkish presidential elections from the first round, and we wish Turkey and its people all the luck, security and prosperity under Erdogan's rule," Ennahda leader Rachid Ghannouchi said on his official Facebook page.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ennahda party spokesman Ziad Laadhari described Erdogan's electoral triumph as a "victory for the democratic development model in Turkey led by Erdogan for the past 12 years."

"Erdogan's victory and the rise of the democratic development model in Turkey proves that the Islamic world can embrace democracy and adopt development with no contradiction between Islam and democracy," he said.

"This will boost the democratic transition in the Arab region despite setbacks in the Arab Spring nations," he added.

Erdogan, an outgoing prime minister, was elected president on Sunday by an outright majority, securing 51.96 percent of the vote, according to unofficial counts.

Without providing exact numbers, Turkey's Supreme Election Board confirmed late Sunday that Erdogan had won the poll outright, eliminating the need for a scheduled run-off vote on August 24.

Erdogan, who was elected to a five-year term, will take over the post from outgoing president Abdullah Gul.
