KABUL, Afghanistan – At least 52 people have been killed in two days of clashes between Taliban militants and security forces in eastern Afghanistan, officials said on Monday.

In Nangarhar province, at least 37 militants were killed in fighting in Khogyani without any casualties to government forces, which received air support from ISAF, a spokesman for the governor said.

In Kunar, dozens of Taliban fighters attacked posts on the Pakistan border resulting in 12 Taliban deaths, Governor Shuja ul-Mulk Jalala said in a statement. Two civilians and a police officer were also killed.

Afghanistan security forces have launched a wide-scale operation to combat the insurgency in the east of the country.
