RAMALLAH/GAZA CITY – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh have congratulated Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his victory in Sunday's presidential election.

In a congratulatory cable on Monday, Abbas wished Erdogan success in his new post to achieve welfare and stability for the Turkish people.

Haniyeh also congratulated Erdogan on his electoral victory.

"From victorious Gaza, we congratulate Erdogan on his electoral victory," Haniyeh said in a press release on Monday. "We also congratulate the Turkish people on the success of the democratic process."

Erdogan, Turkey's outgoing prime minister, was elected president on Sunday by an outright majority, securing 51.96 percent of the vote, according to unofficial tallies.

Without providing exact numbers, Turkey's Supreme Election Board confirmed late Sunday that Erdogan had won the poll outright, eliminating the need for a run-off vote that had been scheduled for August 24.

Elected to a five-year term, Erdogan will take over the post from outgoing president Abdullah Gul.
