CAIRO – Egyptian army troops have killed nine militants in the Sinai Peninsula, an army spokesman said Tuesday.
"Army troops raided terrorists' hideouts in Northern Sinai, killing nine terrorists in ensuing clashes," spokesman Mohamed Samir wrote on his official Facebook page.
He said that 15 other militants have been arrested during raids in North Sinai, the canal city of Ismailia and the Nile Delta province of Daqahliya.
According to the spokesman, army forces destroyed the opening of a tunnel in the North Sinai city of Rafah and arrested 21 people – three Egyptians and 18 Syrians.
The army has launched a major offensive against militant groups said to be based in the Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip.
The region has seen a spate of attacks by unknown gunmen since last summer's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the army.
