BERLIN - Bayern Munich will be without Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez for the opening months of the new German football season after he injured his knee playing Borussia Dortmund in the Super Cup.
The club said he suffered a torn ligament in his left knee during Wednesday night’s game and could miss the first half of the season.
Martinez promised to “come back even stronger." He will travel to America for an operation, the club’s website added.
The Spaniard is a versatile player who can play in midfield and defense. He was integral to Bayern winning the UEFA Champions League title in 2013 and the domestic double last season.
