DOHA – Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Monday received outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who had arrived in the oil-rich Gulf country one day earlier, local media has reported.

The meeting was attended by Kuwaiti Defense Minister Khaled Al-Sabah and Deputy Minister of the Emir's Court Ali Al-Sabah, Kuwait's state-run KUNA news agency reported.

According to an earlier statement issued by Kuwait's Defense Ministry, Hagel will discuss military cooperation and issues of mutual concern with Kuwaiti officials.

Kuwait, which signed a major security deal with the United States in 1991, hosts a substantial U.S. military presence – considered the largest in the Gulf region.

Hagel resigned last month. U.S. President Barack Obama has since named former deputy defense secretary Ashton Carter as his pick to succeed Hagel.
