Dec. 16: "Norway sells arms to millionaire Nigerian warlord"

An Anadolu Agency article published Dec. 16 under the headline "Norway sells arms to millionaire Nigerian warlord" included a factual error and a lack of clarity.

Due to an editing error, the article stated incorrectly that the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet had reported that the Nigerian businessman and former rebel leader Government Ekpemupolo was allegedly using warships originally owned by Norway to engage in piracy. In fact, although other news organizations have reported such an allegation, Dagbladet has reported no such allegation.

In addition, in the headline and in the article itself, the sale of seven decommissioned battleships by Norway to Ekpemupolo was described as the sale of "arms." While military experts often include vehicles in the term "arms," the description -- particularly when juxtaposed with a photograph of a man carrying a rifle -- could have given an erroneous impression to the general reader. The sale involved vessels.

The Anadolu Agency regrets the error and any incorrect impression given.
