US, Germany, Italy bid for 2024 Olympics: committee

- Countries from all over the world have been invited to submit their bids by Sept. 15.

GENEVA (AA) - The bidding process for the 2024 Olympics has begun with a new invitation phase, the International Olympic Committee said Thursday.

Italy's Rome, the U.S.'s Boston and German cities Berlin and Hamburg were the only candidates for the leading sporting event so far.

"Interested National Olympic Committees and potential bid cities are invited to discuss their initial ideas with the IOC and receive various levels of assistance and feedback ahead of the Sept. 15 deadline for officially committing to a bid," the committee said in a statement.

"There has been a strong interest in hosting the 2024 Olympic Games, with the NOCs of Germany, Italy and the United States already indicating their intention to bid," it added.

The election of the host city for 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in the summer of 2017.
