UAE summons Iraq envoy over airport shooting

DOHA – The Foreign Ministry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has summoned Iraqi Ambassador Muwafaq Mahdi Abboud to express its concern after a UAE plane came under fire at the Baghdad International Airport one day earlier.

Ministry Undersecretary Mohamed Mer al-Raisi has demanded that the Iraqi authorities launch an investigation into the incident "in order to identify the circumstances surrounding the shooting," the state-run WMA news agency reported on Tuesday.

The development comes after a Flydubai passenger plane bound for Dubai came under fire on Monday before landing at Baghdad International Airport.

The attack prompted UAE-based air carriers – including Emirates Airlines, Etihad and Air Arabia – to indefinitely suspend flights to and from the Iraqi capital.
