Turkey in 2002: January
JANUARY 1 Turkish Civil Code and Law on Enforcement of Turkish Penal Code, envisaging
important developments in Turkish family law, took effect. The husband lost
the chairmanship of house. Equal rights were given to women and the men in administration
of marriage. Also permission was given to sex change. JANUARY 3 Women, working in public institutions and organizations were given the right
to wear trousers. Ankara State Security Court (DGM) no:2 sentenced Ferhan Ozmen, Necdet Yuksel and Rustu Aytufan to capital punishment in ''Hope Case'' covering murder of Journalist Ugur Mumcu and 22 other secret incidents. A total of 16 other convicts were given various imprisonment terms. Five convicts were acquitted, and another one benefited from amnesty. JANUARY 9 General Staff took a decision and said Turkey would participate in International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan with a unit. It said six Turkish officers would be assigned in the Headquarters. Constitutional Court decided to give a warning to Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to exclude AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan from founder membership. JANUARY 21 President Ahmet Necdet Sezer approved Public Procurement Law and Public Tender Contracts Law.
