Turkey in 2002: February
FEBRUARY 3 Earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter Scale occurred in Afyon province. The epicenter of the quake was Sultandagi Township. A total of 43 people died and 318 others were injured in the quake. A total of 622 houses, business places and official buildings were damaged. FEBRUARY 6 European Union (EU) Adjustment Bill, which caused discussions among coalition partners the Motherland Party (ANAP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and envisaging amendments to Turkish Penal Code (TCK) and several laws became legalized. Provisions which re-arranges TCK no: 159 and 312 was adopted despite against votes of MHP. FEBRUARY 9 Labour Party leader Dogu Perincek said European Union Commission Ankara
Representative Karen Fogg sent secret messages through internet, and carried
out activities targeting national state. FEBRUARY 13 Ankara Republican Chief Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation
against announcement of the messages of EU Commission Ankara Representative
Karen Fogg to public. FEBRUARY 18 Following two protests in front of Prime Ministry Central Building, a taxi driver Ibrahim Haluk Erenler set his car into fire near Prime Ministry building because he could not pay any more his credit card debts. Labour Party made denouncement to Ankara Public Chief Prosecutor's Office on charges that Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and some ministry bureaucrats exchanged information with EU Commission Turkey Representative Karen Fogg secretly.
