MARCH 6

Ankara no:9 Heavy Criminal Court sentenced former leader of the banned Welfare Party (RP) Necmettin Erbakan in the case known as ''missing trillion'' in public up to two years four months imprisonment terms on charges of ''falsification in documents''.

MARCH 21

Protests took place in Mersin province during Nevruz celebrations where permission was not given for demonstrations. There was street fighting between a group and security forces. Police warned the group to disperse but they attacked police forces with clubs and stones. Two demonstrators lost their lives during the clash.
A patrolling police panzer to control incidents which could erupt because of Nevruz celebrations, fell down from an overpass killing two policemen. Another one was seriously injured.

MARCH 26

Parliamentary General Assembly adopted the draft law regarded with making amendment to various laws that were prepared within the framework of adjustment to the European Union.

MARCH 29

The reasoned verdict regarding the case on 22 assassinations including killing of Ugur Mumcu, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Taner Kislali, Prof. Dr. Muammer Aksoy and Doc. Dr. Bahriye Ucok was announced. 24 suspects were tried in the case regarding the operation which was launched to capture assailants of prominent journalist and writer Ugur Mumcu and then covered 22 more cases like the killings of Kislali, Aksoy, and Ucok.
The reasoned verdict said that there was serious evidence that Iran was behind the incidents and noted, ''terrorism, which is a means in foreign policy of Iran, was often used against Turkey, which is considered as the biggest rival in the region by making use of the current potential.''
