AUGUST 1 Ankara State Security Court (DGM) Prosecutor Nuh Mete Yuksel denounced
the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to the Supreme Court of Appeals
Chief Prosecutor's Office. AUGUST 3 Historical steps were taken under adjustment efforts with the European Union (EU). Under a law approved by the parliament, death sentence was lifted except for warfare and risk of imminent war. Education and broadcasting in different mother tongues and dialects including Kurdish, were allowed. Minority foundation were granted the right to obtain real properties. Genocide Monument erected in the memory of 51 Turkish people who were massacred by Armenians in Hakahmet village in eastern province of Igdir, was inaugurated. AUGUST 8 President Ahmet Necdet Sezer approved the European Union (EU) adjustment laws package. AUGUST 9 Parliamentary General Assembly approved the labor security draft law. AUGUST 10 Kemal Dervis resigned from his post as the state minister for economy. Masum Turker was appointed as the new state minister in charge of economy. AUGUST 14 President Ahmet Necdet Sezer approved labor security law. AUGUST 21 Former State Minister Kemal Dervis met with Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal for the second time, and announced his decision to join the CHP. AUGUST 22 ''Call Me Crimson'' of leading writer Orhan Pamuk was presented with the Best Foreign Language Book Award of France. AUGUST 27 During archaeological excavations in Pasalar village in Mustafakemal town of northwestern province of Bursa, fossils belonged to animal species which had lived 15 million years ago and which were seen only in African continent, were unearthed. The elephant which was found in the excavations, was named as ''Pashalarensis''. AUGUST 31 Erkan Mumcu who resigned from the Motherland Party (ANAP), joined the Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
