Turkey in 2002: September

 

SEPTEMBER 1

The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) filed a lawsuit against Halis Toprak, the former owner of Toprakbank which was transferred to the Savings and Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF), and 18 former bank directors on charges of causing the bank to suffer a loss of 874 trillion 382 billion Turkish liras as a result of illegal loans and improper management.

SEPTEMBER 4

Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions (Turk-Is) Chairman Bayram Meral joined the Republican People's Party (CHP).

General Staff announced that members of the Turkish Armed Forces could work in the European Army Corps.

SEPTEMBER 5

The People's Democracy Party (HADEP, the Labour Party (EMEP) and the Socialist Democracy Party (SDP) decided to join the general elections under the roof of Democratic People's Party (DEHAP).

Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit released a decree to finalize all regulations and arrangements regarded with putting into practice the European Union (EU) adjustment laws till October 1, 2002.

Diyarbakir State Security Court (DGM) no: 1 decided to remove conviction of banned Welfare Party (RP) leader Necmettin Erbakan in accordance with Article 312 of the Turkish Penal Code from his record of convictions.

SEPTEMBER 6

Diyarbakir State Security Court (DGM) no: 4 decided to clear record of convictions of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan who was convicted in accordance with Article 312 of the Turkish Penal Code.

SEPTEMBER 8

The True Path Party (DYP) and the Brilliant Turkey Party (ATP) decided to cooperate in the general elections to be held on November 3, 2002.

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) filed a lawsuit at the Constitutional Court, and requested annulment of six articles of the law no: 4771 including commuting death sentence to life imprisonment.

SEPTEMBER 20

The Higher Election Board (YSK) rejected applications of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, banned Welfare Party (RP) leader Necmettin Erbakan, People's Democracy Party (HADEP) former leader Murat Bozlak and Socialist Democracy Party (SDP) former leader Akin Birdal to become candidates in the general elections.

SEPTEMBER 21

The Higher Election Board (YSK) accepted application of businessman Fadil Akgunduz to become an independent deputy from southeastern province of Siirt.
