DECEMBER 2 Mehmet Agar became candidate for True Path Party (DYP) leadership. The Higher Election Board (YSK) decided to cancel the general elections in southeastern province of Siirt, and renew the elections. DECEMBER 4 Constitutional Court gave an extra period of 30 days to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to submit its preliminary defense in the closure case. The Higher Election Board (YSK) announced that the elections would be renewed in southeastern province of Siirt on February 9, 2003. DECEMBER 7 21-year-old Turkish model Azra Akin took the Miss World crown in a contest in British capital London. DECEMBER 10 Fadil Akgunduz was arrested and sent to prison after he was stripped off his deputyship. DECEMBER 13 Parliamentary General Assembly approved three-article constitutional amendment. DECEMBER 14 Selma Korkut, a member of Turkish Communist Party-Marxist and Leninist Turkish Workers and Peasant Liberation Army (TKP-ML-TIKKO) who was involved in the bomb attack on former governor Ayhan Cevik of Cankiri, was arrested after surrendering to security forces in central province of Sivas. Mehmet Agar was elected as the new leader of the True Path Party (DYP). DECEMBER 18 The regulations which arrange rules and principles of radio and television broadcasting in different languages and dialects that are spoken by Turkish people in daily life, entered into force. Associate Prof. Dr. Necip Hablemitoglu from the Ankara University was assassinated in an armed attack in front of his house in Cankaya district of Ankara. DECEMBER 19 President Ahmet Necdet Sezer returned the law envisaging amendments to articles 76, 78 and 67 of the Constitution to be debated by the parliament again. DECEMBER 20 Ali Talip Ozdemir announced that he would run for candidacy during the extraordinary congress of the Motherland Party (ANAP) to be held between January 11 and 12, 2003. DECEMBER 21 Associate Prof. Dr. Necip Hablemitoglu from the Ankara University who was assassinated in an armed attack in front of his house in Cankaya district of Ankara, was laid to rest. President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, General Staff Chief General Hilmi Ozkok, True Path Party (DYP) leader Mehmet Agar and Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader Bulent Ecevit were in attendance at the funeral.
