Turkey in 2003: April

APRIL 2

  • U.S. soldiers who were deployed in Mardin Organized Industry Zone started to leave the city.
  • Istanbul High Criminal Court started to hear a case on Sedat Bucak on three separate charges in connection with Susurluk case.
  • Military vehicles and equipment belonging to the United States which were awaited in Gaziantep Airport were taken to Incirlik and Iskenderun.

APRIL 7

  • Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey did not have any aim to enter the north of Iraq.

APRIL 9

  • Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit against five party officials of closed Welfare Party (RP), including Felicity Party (SP) leader Recai Kutan on charges of ''falsification in special documents'' regarding the Treasury aid to RP.

APRIL 10

  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer sent back the law foreseeing some amendments in articles of Tax Peace Law to be discussed again to the parliament.

APRIL 11

  • Iraq Summit was held at Prime Ministry under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Erdogan with participation of Chief of General Staff, Foreign Minister, National Defense Minister and some bureaucrats.
  • Mustafa Zeydan, an independent deputy from Hakkari province, joined the Motherland Party (ANAP).

APRIL 17

  • A ship, named ''Cape Vincent,'' aboard which U.S. material, equipment, vehicles and helicopters were loaded left Iskenderun Port.
  • Regulation on Principles and Procedures of Radios and Televisions was issued in the Official Gazette. Supreme Board of Radio and Television (RTUK) was enabled to give fine to television and radio channels.
  • Republican People's Party (CHP) filed a suit at the Constitutional Court requesting the annulment and stopping the enforcement of the law which reduced retirement age for civil servants from 65 to 61.

APRIL 18

  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer vetoed Constitutional amendment on decreasing the age of eligibility to be a deputy to 25 and amendment enabling sale, rent and transfer of fields which can no more be called a forest before December 31, 1981.

APRIL 24

  • New Turkey Party (YTP) deputy leader Husamettin Ozkan resigned from his party.

APRIL 25

  • Health measures were taken at Kapikule border gate after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which affected Far East countries was also seen in Bulgaria.

APRIL 26

  • Gendarme Human Rights Violation Inspection and Assessment Center was opened.
  • Ertan Gonen was re-elected as chairman of Red Crescent.

APRIL 28

  • Convoy including seven trucks and four ambulances sent from Red Crescent passed from Habur border gate to Iraq.

APRIL 29

  • Erkan Mumcu was assigned as Culture and Tourism Minister and Guldal Aksit became State Minister.
  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer assigned Nuri Ok, chairman of Supreme Court 11th Criminal Department, as Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor.
  • A military helicopter crashed near Egirdir township in southern Isparta province.

APRIL 30

  • A statement which was issued after the meeting of National Security Council (NSC) underlined the importance of secularism principle which is one of the basic peculiarities of the state and the necessity of protecting it fastidiously.
