Turkey in 2003: May

MAY 1

  • An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale shook southeastern Bingol province. A total of 176 people died and 521 people were injured.
  • Operation Northern Watch ended officially with a ceremony in Incirlik Base.

MAY 2

  • Unpleasant incidents took place in Bingol during the distribution of aid material. Bingol Security Director Osman Nuri Ozdemir was dismissed from his position when a policeman drove his car on citizens.

MAY 5

  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer approved the law on turning imprisonment and punishments that prevented freedom not more than three months to fine.

MAY 8

  • Constitutional Court accepted the request of Republican People's Party (CHP) to stop enforcement of the arrangement envisaging decrease of obligatory retirement age of civil servants from 65 to 61.
  • Osman Pepe was appointed as Environment and Forestry Minister. Kursad Tuzmen became State Minister.

MAY 11

  • Necmettin Erbakan was elected as the leader of Felicity Party (SP) in the first regular congress of the party.

MAY 13

  • The Supreme Court of Appeal Chief Prosecutor's Office decided that there was no need to file a closure case against the Motherland Party (ANAP) as a result of an investigation into the ANAP's relations with the Conrad Adenauer Foundation Association.

MAY 17

  • Turkish Labor Unions (Turk-Is) held a demonstration at Tandogan Square to protest new labor draft law that had been discussed at Parliament.
  • Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Greek Cypriot citizens could enter Turkey without visa as of May 22.

MAY 20

  • Terrorist organization DHKP/C member Sengul Akkurt blew up the bomb on herself in a cafe in Kizilay district of Ankara. Akkurt died.
  • Novelist Orhan Pamuk won IMPAC Dublin Literary Award which was one of the world's richest literary prizes with his novel ''My Name is Red''.

MAY 22

  • A group of tourists comprising of health personnel came to Istanbul after Turkey allowed Greek Cypriot citizens to enter Turkey without visa.

  • An Ukrainian plane crashed near Macka town of northern Trabzon province. A total of 62 soldiers of Spanish Peace Force and 13 crew members died.

MAY 28

  • National Security Council (NSC) made a general evaluation of Turkey-European Union (EU) relations and New Accession Partnership Accord and discussed activities to be carried on with EU in coming period and evaluated the recent developments in Cyprus and Iraq.
  • Member of terrorist organization Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) Ercan Kartal, who had been tried in various cases including Sabanci assassination and assassination attempt to Kenan Evren, was punished with life imprisonment.

MAY 29

  • General Staff Deputy Chief General Yasar Buyukanit said during his speech at Globalization and National Security Symposium, ''Turkish Armed Forces cannot be against the European Union. Because, EU is the geopolitical and geostrategic obligation of modernization target which was put forth by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk for the Turkish society.''
  • Republican People's Party (CHP) applied to Constitutional Court for cancellation of the Law on taking additional taxes to restore economic stability.

MAY 30

  • Prof. Dr. Ali Bardakoglu was appointed as the head of Religious Affairs Department.
