JUNE 2

  • Speaking at the opening of the Silk Road-2003 General-Admiral Seminar, General Staff Chief General Hilmi Ozkok said, ''the European Union (EU) has not included KADEK in its list of terrorist organizations. It is an important sign of current point of the joint understanding in the international platform against terrorism. The EU's attitude means a support to acts of terror of KADEK.'' General Ozkok added that Turkey wanted to join actively to the rebuilding process of Iraq and make the maximum contribution.

JUNE 3

  • A remote-control bomb planted under an overcrossing in Bakirkoy district of Istanbul was detonated as a minibus carrying prosecutors and judges of the State Security Court (DGM) was passing. Five people were wounded in the blast.

JUNE 5

  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer approved a law including arrangements about solving problems of those who suffered loss in recent earthquakes and natural disasters as soon as possible.

JUNE 6

  • The Free Society Party (OTP) was founded.

JUNE 7

  • A passenger bus hit the wall of a tunnel on the highway between eastern province of Erzincan and central province of Sivas. 27 people lost their lives and 33 others were wounded.

JUNE 8

  • The foundation of the first stage of Ankara-Istanbul rapid train project was laid by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

JUNE 11

  • Two hand-grenades were thrown at the U.S. Consulate in southern province of Adana. One of the bombs went off while the other was defused. There was not any report of casualties. The man who threw the bombs were captured later.

JUNE 12

  • A fire-extinguisher plane crashed in Aliaga town of western province of Izmir as intervening in a forest fire. Pilot of the plane died in the accident.

JUNE 17

  • A campaign was launched in eastern province of Van in co-operation between the Ministry of National Education and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for education of girls.

JUNE 18

  • Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced Young Party (GP) leader Cem Uzan who criticized him harshly at a rally in northwestern province of Bursa.

JUNE 19

  • The Ministry of Justice allowed prosecutors to launch an investigation against Young Party (GP) leader Cem Uzan who criticized Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan harshly at a rally in northwestern province of Bursa.
  • The Republican People's Party (CHP) applied to the Constitutional Court for annulment of the law envisaging to combine the ministries of environment and forestry.

JUNE 20

  • Building of a boarding Koran course collapsed in central province of Kayseri. Ten people lost their lives and 13 others were wounded.
  • Tiles which were stolen from the Sinanpasa Mosque in Yenisehir town of northwestern province of Bursa, were returned to Turkey by Britain. Also, a handwritten book of famous mystic and philosopher Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, which was discovered in a catalogue of Christie's Auction Hall in Britain, was returned to Turkey. It was revealed that the 22-page handwritten book dated October 24, 1205, was one of the works stolen from the Yusuf Aga Manuscript Museum in central province of Konya.

JUNE 22

  • The period of military service was decreased from 18 months to 15 months, the period of military service as reserve officer was reduced from 16 months to 13 months and the period of short-term military service was dropped from 8 months to 6 months.

JUNE 30

  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer returned the Sixth European Union (EU) adjustment package enabling public and private radio and TV channels to broadcast in different languages and dialects used traditionally by Turkish citizens in their daily lives and annulling the Article 8 of the Anti-Terrorism Law, to the parliament for re-consideration.
