Turkey in 2003: December

DECEMBER 1

  • Hilmi Tugluoglu and his wife Leyla Tugluoglu, who were captured in Syria in connection with bomb attacks in Istanbul, were brought to Ankara.
  • Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader Bulent Ecevit stated that he would resign from leadership in the DSP regular congress which would be held after local election.

DECEMBER 2

  • Twenty people who were brought from Syria to Turkey on charges of being involved in terrorist attacks in Istanbul and who were transferred to Hatay Court House were released.
  • Supreme Court of Appeals Criminal Department unanimously ratified two years and four months of imprisonment given to Necmettin Erbakan, the banned Welfare Party (RP) leader, on charges of ''forgery in documents'' in the case publicly known as ''lost trillion case''.
    The Criminal Department also ratified imprisonment terms ranging between one year and one year and two months for almost 70 other people who were tried also in the same case while separated files about two people who were elected deputy.

DECEMBER 3

  • Ankara Heavy Criminal Court sentenced five former administrators of Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS) to 11 months and 20 days in prison on charges that they misused their authority and caused losses for the state in the Samsun-Ankara natural gas pipeline project.
    The court commuted imprisonment sentence into fine and postponed the punishment.

DECEMBER 4

  • Hilmi Tugluoglu and his wife Leyla Tugluoglu, who were captured in Syria on charges of being involved in bomb attacks in Istanbul, were brought to Ankara State Security Court (DGM). Hilmi Tugluoglu was arrested on charges of aiding and abetting a terrorist organization while his wife was released.
  • Supreme Military Council (YAS) which convened under chairmanship of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to dismiss two personnel from Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) due to their undisciplined behaviors.

DECEMBER 5

  • Term in office of Prof. Dr. Kemal Guruz, the Higher Election Board (YOK) Chairman, ended.

DECEMBER 8

  • President Ahmet Necdet Sezer appointed Prof. Dr. Erdogan Tezic, the Rector of Galatasaray University, as YOK Chairman.

DECEMBER 13

  • Nesrin Nas was elected leader of Motherland Party (ANAP) in the eight regular congress of ANAP.
  • Fevzi Yitiz, who was claimed to place bombs on pick-up trucks used in bomb attacks in Istanbul, was captured in southeastern Hakkari province and brought to Istanbul.

DECEMBER 14

  • Istanbul State Security Court (DGM) arrested Fevzi Yitiz on charges of being involved in bomb attacks in Istanbul.

DECEMBER 19

  • State Security Court (DGM) sent Adnan Ersoz to prison in connection with bomb attacks in Istanbul.

DECEMBER 22

  • A warrant of arrest was issued for Necmettin Erbakan, the banned Welfare Party (RP) leader and the current leader of Felicity Party (SP), for execution of his imprisonment sentence. Erbakan was sentenced to two years and four months in prison on charges of ''forgery in documents.''
